It’s your annual warning! For us, fireworks night is an exciting occasion filled with colourful displays, sparklers and celebrations. But for our four-legged friends, the loud bangs, flashes and unexpected noises can be frightening and stressful, as we know ‘oh too well!’
Dogs have much more sensitive hearing than we do, so fireworks that seem manageable to us can feel incredibly loud and unpredictable to them. Some dogs may hide, shake or pace, while others may bark, whine or try to escape.
The good news is that there are plenty of things you can do to help your dog feel safer and more settled.
Create a Safe Space
Before the fireworks begin, set up a comfortable area where your dog can retreat if they feel worried. This could be their bed, crate or a quiet room with familiar blankets and toys.
Close curtains and windows to reduce flashes and noise, and consider playing the television, radio or calming music to help mask some of the sounds outside.
Most importantly, allow your dog to choose whether they want to hide or stay close to you. Never force them out of their safe space.
Keep Them Company
Your dog may look to you for reassurance when the fireworks start. Try to remain calm and behave normally. Gentle interaction and reassurance can help, particularly if your dog seeks you out.
If your dog wants to stay beside you, let them. If they prefer to hide away somewhere quiet, give them space while remaining nearby.
A long walk earlier in the day can also help your dog settle before the evening begins. Once fireworks are underway, keep dogs safely indoors and make sure doors, windows and gates are secure.
Consider Hemp & Calm Oil
For owners looking for an additional way to support their dog’s relaxation during potentially stressful occasions, many of our loyal customers know that our Hemp & Calm Oils can be incorporated into a dog’s diet. (Last year we struggled to keep up with the demand in the few weeks’ run-up to Fireworks night, so this year we aren’t taking any chances!)
Intended to support calm and relaxation, our oils are packed with Omegas 3,6 and 9 to help with joints, and skin too, making it a product many owners already use as a routine, but others may consider specifically ahead of occasions such as fireworks night.
This year we can also offer the option of our brand new Calm Support Chews, which are formulated to help maintain calmness and support relaxed, balanced behaviour, wrapped into a tasty treat. You can pair these with our Hemp Seed Calm Oil, saving more money with our new Calm Duo Bundle. Head on over to our shop for more info.
Don’t Wait Until the Fireworks Start
If your dog becomes particularly anxious around fireworks, preparation is key. Start creating positive associations with their safe space before fireworks night and make sure everything they need is ready in advance.
For dogs with severe noise anxiety, it’s also worth speaking with your vet now, before the fireworks season really kicks in. They can provide personalised advice and discuss appropriate options for your dog’s needs..
A Calmer Fireworks Night for Everyone
Fireworks night doesn’t have to be a stressful experience for your dog. With a little preparation, a secure environment, plenty of reassurance and products such as Hemp & Calm Oil, and Calm Support Chews, you can help make the evening more comfortable for your four-legged family member.
